We,
the staff, recognize the importance of pets. In addition to allowing each
resident to have his or her own pet that stays in the resident’s apartment, we keep two “community pets”
in our activity room for our residents’ enjoyment. Trixie, by far our most
popular pet, is a 16 month old Pomeranian dog who loves everyone. She is always
happy to play catch or let residents pet her for as long as they desire. Many
of our residents’ grandchildren stop in to visit with Trixie and she loves every second of their attention.
Animals
provide a completely non-judgmental friend who is there regardless of whether you are in a wheelchair, using a walker or cane. It does not matter to the animal. They
are simply glad you are there. Unlike talking to people, which can actually RAISE
blood pressure, talking to an animal actually LOWERS blood pressure.
Randy, the oldest resident in our community is a Golden Retriever who loves to hop on the elevator
and go visit different residents in our community. He is very calm and very good at helping residents
who need a little distraction from their troubles. Always the gentleman, Randy always says "Please' when asking for
treats.
The other pet in the activity room is our parrot.
Savannah
is a 9-month old female Solomon Island Eclectus. Her beautiful red and blue
plumage is always an eye opener that attracts many of our residents. Savannah
always has something to say! Popular words are “Mama,” “Hello,”
“Give Me A Kiss,” “Granny” but there really is no telling what she will say next. The Eclectus species is known for its intelligence and it is said that they have the intellect of a 7 year
old child once they reach sexual maturity. Savannah
certainly is as mischievous as a 7 year old and she is still just a baby.
